How Arcanum Studio Started

One founder, one city, one debut game. This is the honest story of why Arcanum Studio exists, what Arcane Ascent is, and what joining the waitlist actually means.

How This Started

Arcanum Studio is one person, one city, one debut game. That person is me. The city is Nairobi. The game is Arcane Ascent, an idle cultivation RPG.

This is the origin story.

Why Games

I didn't start with a plan to build a game studio. I started as a player who couldn't stop thinking about how games worked.

The genre that got me was idle cultivation RPGs. If you haven't played one: you take the role of a mortal who discovers the path of cultivation, and your job is to advance through realms of power, gather qi, master techniques, and inch toward immortality. It's an idle game, which means progress continues while you're away. You open the app and your character has been quietly growing stronger. You make a few decisions, assign tasks, and close it again. The loop is satisfying in a way that's hard to explain until you've felt it.

What I kept noticing was the gap between games that honored this loop and games that exploited it. The best cultivation games feel fair. Progress is meaningful. The IAP hooks are there for players who want to move faster, not to stop players who won't pay. The worst ones corrupt the loop entirely: no payment, no progress. The gap between good and bad was a design gap, not a genre problem.

That's what I started building toward.

The Debut Game: Arcane Ascent

Arcane Ascent is an idle cultivation RPG built for mobile and web. The premise: you are a mortal who discovers the path. From there, everything follows. Gather qi. Forge pills. Master cultivation arts. Break through realm barriers. The world expands with each breakthrough, and the decisions grow more meaningful as you rise.

The design is built on three commitments.

Progression that respects your time. Sessions are short by design. You open the game, check your progress, make a few decisions, and go. An hour later, you've advanced. The game works for you between sessions.

A loop you don't have to pay to enjoy. Arcane Ascent will have IAP for players who want to move faster or unlock cosmetic cultivation arts. It will not gate core progression behind payment. The free path is real.

A cultivation system with actual depth. Most idle games peak quickly. Arcane Ascent is designed for a long arc: techniques that interact, cultivation paths that diverge, realms that take real time to reach. The goal is a game players come back to for months.

What the Waitlist Is For

Arcane Ascent is in active development. The early-access waitlist is not a marketing list. It's the group of people who help decide what the game becomes.

Waitlist members get first access when the playable build is ready. They also get honest devlog updates as development progresses. When design decisions come up where player input matters, waitlist members will be asked directly. What should the starting cultivation path feel like? Which realm breakthrough mechanic is more satisfying? That kind of question.

If you've played cultivation games and have opinions about what works and what frustrates you, that perspective is useful and wanted.

The Honest Version

Arcanum Studio is a solo studio with a limited budget and a clear view of the timeline. Getting Arcane Ascent to a playable alpha is a 3 to 6 month project. There is no team to absorb mistakes. Every decision counts.

That's not a complaint. That's the constraint that forces good choices.

Building from Nairobi, for a global audience, against studios with larger teams and bigger budgets, is ambitious. The games that succeed in this genre earn their audience through design quality, not marketing spend. That's where the focus is.
