Choosing the First Game: Idle vs Adventure vs Action

Three game types, one solo dev, and a 3-6 month window. How I'm deciding which to build first.

|Arcanum Studio

The three candidates

Arcanum Studio has three game concepts on the board:

  • Realm Ascendant — idle cultivation RPG. Lower design complexity, proven genre, strong SEA/East Asia alignment. Lower barrier to a playable v1.
  • Wayfarer's Chronicle — adventure RPG. Narrative-heavy, higher production cost, harder to build solo in 6 months. Better fit post-first-game.
  • Iron Ascent — action combat. Highest fun ceiling, hardest to polish solo. Needs tuned feel and tight controls — that takes time.

The decision framework

For a solo founder on a sub-$1,000 budget with a 3-6 month runway to a playable build, the right first game has to meet three bars:

  1. Shippable by one person in the window
  2. Enough core loop depth to retain players through early access
  3. Clear IAP hooks from the design phase (not bolted on after)

Idle cultivation hits all three. Adventure and action are second and third projects.

What's next

Realm Ascendant enters active design. The next devlog covers the core loop spec — what a single play session looks like from cold open to first major milestone.
